My speedometer is all cracked up and held on by zip ties and glue. Do you guys ever use after market speedometers or would you recommend just buying a used intruder one? And if I bought a used one could I change the odometer to read what mine is? Thanks fellas

I'd look for a factory style replacement. That way the wheel/speed rations would be the same.  Check with greasycooter.  With a piece of speedo cable, some time and a 3/8 drill you can change the numbers to whatever you want!

Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather it is to skid in broadside, totally worn out and proclaiming, "WOW, WHAT A RIDE!!"

You would only be able to roll the numbers forward.. UP.. using Reverse with a drill and it'll take ages to get serious miles on.

You could slowly and carefully pry the chrome trim cap off and roll the numbers to whatever you want though.

If you want to do that.. let me know first. You don't want to break the odometer.

I have a 1986 VS 750 and the speedo drive is on the right hand side, seems all the other newer bikes are on the left side, will the speedometer work for me from a left hand drive bike or would it go in reverse so to speak. I would love a trip odometer and I already have the housing.

Thanks Bronx! I'll be out of state for a few weeks so I won't be able to get one till the start of June but when I do I'll contact you if it's ok.

In my state, and probably others, you note the speedo replacement mileage on the title to keep it legal. CA has more rules than MO, so you might want to check on that.

I'll try being nicer if you try being smarter.

Not that my input will matter.  I ended up getting an aftermarket digital speedometer.  I've liked the change, personally.  I went with the Acewell speedometer type.

Sometimes it takes a whole tankful of fuel before you can think straight.

I have a 1986 vs700GL and am looking at getting a new speedometer as well because mine is cracked and not working (speed or odometer) which model Acewell did you get and was it difficult to install?
