I would like to start this post by apologizing for forum abuse. I have been just posting my questions and not doing my own research. All the questions have been asked and answered. And from what ive seen this forum much better organized than any other. So, sorry. In the future i will do my own reasearch first. Now for my plan. I intend to rejet, 145/150 front/rear seems to be the most common setup for my conditions. And a 14inch extension to the headrer pipes with a turndown end, to include lollipops for that crucial backpressure. And since im going to all that trouble, star washers. If i can gather the funds, i found a snowflake rear wheel for $300 which would open the door to the darkside without slathering my spoke wheel with silicone. Any comments/ suggestions are welcome and if im doing something stupid please let me know. Thanks

Don't know why yer apologizing Sean. This IS the best place to do yer research!

The star washers are highly recommended.

If you get a rear snowflake... what year is the 700? I THINK they changed the swingarm in '86 to accommodate that wheel as an option. I say this because I have an '85 750 (Canada, eh), and when I added a snowflake to mine, I had to shim the wheel over to the right a little, and shave the left shoulder of my 150 Avon, which fit fine with the spoke wheel. I'm guessing the '85 swingarm is prolly unique, so any of the later units wouldn't have this issue...

Mine is an 86 so i should be good, right? I have an idea for the lollipops... So i was doing some research here, the right way, and i found a thread that explains the physics of the lollipop. So if the they were movable while riding you could have the best of both worlds: low end torque with them perpendicular to exhaust flow and top end speed when parallel... The mechanics of it wouldnt be too hard, it would only require a servo and some linkage. The trick is either being willing to manually send the signal to rotate or finding a way to make it speed dependent.  I dont really have a need to go fast enough here in hawaii, since there are more potholes than original pavement and no real place to open up, but if someone could use it let me know what you think.

I think so. That wheel was available on the '86 & '87s, so should go right on there...

I bought the snowflake... Going to pick it up tomorrow... Hes gotta pull it off the donor... And also before i rejet im going to build the air shields and if that doesnt work ill throw the old pipes on and see how it does... We checked compression today, didnt do it wot but after cranking it for about 15 seconds it got up to ~140 psi on both... Rear spark plug electrode was a little white... Not surprised with k&n's and header pipes only.

Someone here has restricted air flow thru the KN filters by putting socks over them .
I'm not sure if they were wool or cotton, and he's probably happy I couldn't remember who it was .

You are quite the dreamer, rider tuned lolipops, on the fly .
Do something about that jetting before you toast it .

I hope you get it running...and ride it .

About the on the fly lollipops... Its not really that complicated, but i can understand not wanting another thing to break. As far as the socks.. That will richen it up with air restriction but what is your belief on the whole turbulent air causing fluctuating pressures at the filter, which would negatively impact my mixture. Is this causing my problems or is there just too much air? And also on the socks, were they a permanent install or was it for diagnostics?

Cuban may have an abundance of wool socks... But im running a little short out here in HI...

Laff it up ya bunch of Yo-Hos!    Ya'll WISH you had my performance! After I put those blue babies on there, the bike starts before I hit the button, and can pull wheelies through every gear with the throttle barely cracked. AND I'm getting 567.3 mpg. Oh yeah...  all the sweet babes line up on the side of the road when they hear me coming, just so they can throw their tops at me... trying to get me ta stop and take 'em for a ride...

Way too deep for me, know that the slides open thru vacuum...not pulled open with the cables, more air less vac and the reason the opening in the stock air boxes is about the same diameter as the carb throat.

We have a seperate forum just for carb tuning, what's that tell you .

Yup, this will be the 4th riding season with them on there. I had installed a set of V&H Classic IIs, and liked the looks, the sound and the quicker throttle response. Stock air boxes and filters...

Then I got a set of K&N pods from HDI, and installed them just before heading out on a trip. Took her out on the highway for a proper plug reading, and it was lean. Quite lean...

edit: Still stock air boxes, now stuffed with electronics and wiring instead of filters...

The carbs have never been off this bike, and I didn't feel like getting into all that because I wasn't looking for an increase in performance... (top end?) (acceleration?) (why?)

Plus... I wanted to ride! Up here, you have to enjoy it while you can...

So... stole a pair of Blue Wool Socks® from my unsuspecting wife, pulled them over the K&N pods, & took it back out for another proper plug reading. Perfect! The plugs were showing a small bit of tan, still on the hot side, but certainly nothing close to extreme. It was Friday evening by this time, and I was set for the road early the next morning...

The engine runs clean and strong, and gets excellent fuel mileage. Now, some of that may be due to the fact that I'm running it quite a bit hotter than most (all?) of the other Intruders, and the fuel mix really likes that heat, but at least I can say with confidence that I'm very happy with the bike just the way it is. The socks stay.
