I am running Pirelli RT 66's on the 8 and Metzler ME880's on the 14. The Pirelli's were a lot less expensive and handle great, particularly compared to the stock brickstones.

If you're wearing out two tires in a year, I would suggest a better quality, longer lasting tire (like a Metzler, or darkside) I think it is gonna cost you less money in the long term. Definitely, If you figure in the cost and hassle of mounting/dismounting.

I put a Nankang car tire ($54) on my bike over 2 years ago and have close to 20,000 miles on it. I'd have to check my paper work to tell you exactly how many miles. But I do know I would have gone through 2 m/c tires in that time. I'll probably put another car tire on it come next spring.
It is a major PITA to mount but I did it myself so it didn't cost me anything for mounting. The major drawback with c/t's is the amount of air it takes to get the bead to seat. I had to put 95 psi in it before it would pop.

Do a search of darkside tire conversions... lots of people on this site have done it, and can offer some really good advice on what tires work best. Then order one online.

Automotive tire on a motorcycle? How does that corner?
Last time I looked, automotive tires had a fairly flat tread
surface area, because an automotive tire stays fairly flat
in cornering with sidewall flex, where a motorcycle tire has
a rounded profile to allow leaning in the corners. I won't
even start on the tire compound differences. I think I'll
stick with my Avon road riders.

Not any harder to mount, but to get those beads to seat takes a lot of air and plenty of lube on the tire bead and rim. I had already bought the Harbor Freight tire changer with the motorcycle adapter. So it was nothing to change out the tires, but that seating the beads took 2 friggin days until someone on the Darkside board told me to use veggie oil for lube and it pops right on after I used that.
edit: I forgot to say I had to order my tire online. It is a 165/80 15 VW tire. Edited by JohnInOkla on Nov 24, 2011 at 07:28 PM

Darkside riders,
Not to hijack the thread, but I had just a quick and simple question.
Were you able to use the darkside tire with a tube or did you have to perform the tubeless conversion to the rear wheel?
Only reason I'm worried is due to the high seating pressures y'all describe for the car tire on the motorcycle wheel.
Thanks in advance.

Well lets hope it can stand up to the pressure!
Another thing I've noticed with this darkside tire business is that I've gotten no respect from any of the local shops. They would rather spit on me than put a car tire on a motorcycle. Maybe I'm just not into the "big bad biker" scene. I just enjoy riding.
